JEBO: la prima Junior ad impatto zero

Che cosa c’è di più urgente della crisi climatica che stiamo affrontando?
Ciascuno di noi, individualmente e collettivamente, ha la responsabilità di fare qualcosa per il pianeta, se vogliamo lasciarlo alle generazioni future.
La nostra Sara Montalti, Associata dell’Area Comunicazione e studentessa di Business and Economics, oggi ci racconta di come JEBO è diventata la prima Junior Enterprise ad impatto zero.

Questo è il tempo che rimane alla Terra prima che non si possa più tornare indietro e sicuramente non è tanto.
In 6 anni si iniziano a malapena le scuole medie, in 6 anni si prende una laurea senza poterla poi sfruttare realmente: se ti dicessero che hai solo 6 anni ancora di vita, quale sarebbe la prima cosa che faresti?
COMBATTERE!
Combattere per guadagnare più tempo, per poter fare le tue esperienze più a lungo, per vedere crescere le persone a cui vuoi bene, e per raggiungere quei traguardi che ti eri prefissato da bambino, quando ancora guardavi il mondo con gli occhi ingenui.
Il nostro pianeta non è come un alimento del supermercato che una volta scaduto si può ricomprare: di Terra ne abbiamo una sola e, per quanto potrebbero esserci altri pianeti abitabili nell’Universo, a noi è stato concesso questo e certamente non stiamo facendo in modo che duri il più a lungo possibile.
Fare scelte di vita sostenibili non può più essere una tra le possibili opzioni, una moda passeggera, deve essere un obbligo morale nei confronti di noi stessi, che ci meritiamo un futuro, e soprattutto nei confronti delle generazioni alle quali lo stiamo togliendo senza concedere loro alcuna possibilità di scelta.
Prima di poter trovare una soluzione, però, dobbiamo conoscere il problema alla radice: cos’è che porta le lancette dell’orologio terrestre a muoversi in senso antiorario invece che nella giusta direzione?
Il nostro impatto sul Pianeta
Come quando passeggiamo sulla spiaggia e lasciamo le impronte sulla sabbia, allo stesso modo lasciamo sulla Terra segni indelebili che derivano dalle nostre azioni: la nostra carbon footprint, letteralmente l’impronta di carbonio che ognuno di noi lascia sulla Terra a causa del suo stile di vita.
Ogni individuo, organizzazione, azienda, prodotto o servizio ha un’incidenza più o meno gravosa sul Pianeta, la carbon footprint è uno strumento utile per aumentare la consapevolezza, misurare le emissioni e ridurre i consumi.
Capire quanto si incide sull’ecosistema terrestre è il primo passo per diminuire gli sprechi e contribuire all’inversione della drammatica rotta che sta prendendo il cambiamento climatico.
Alla fine del 2020, JEBO ha deciso di calcolare la sua impronta sulla Terra
Inserendo minuziosamente tutti i nostri dati e attraverso l’utilizzo di un calcolatore online, siamo riusciti a stimare il nostro impatto ambientale, corrispondente a un valore pari ad 8 tonnellate di CO² emesse annualmente dall’intera associazione.
Questo valore era già di per sé molto basso, se si pensa che le emissioni globali nel 2019 erano pari a 1.354.388 tonnellate di CO².
Con un inquinamento pari allo 0,0005% di quello mondiale sicuramente ci potevamo già ritenere soddisfatti e fermarci lì, promettendoci di non aumentare i nostri sprechi.
Tuttavia, essere Junior Entrepreneur vuol dire soprattutto investire sul proprio futuro: se non siamo noi i primi a fare qualcosa, non possiamo aspettarci che la facciano gli altri.

Queste sono le tre parole che più caratterizzano JEBO e ci spingono, giorno dopo giorno, a superare i limiti prefissati.
Ecco perché, dopo aver calcolato la nostra impronta sul mondo, siamo passati all’azione e abbiamo deciso di diventare la prima Junior Europea ad avere la Carbon Footprint pari a 0.
Come abbiamo raggiunto questo incredibile risultato?
Grazie alla collaborazione con Zero CO² siamo riusciti ad azzerare il nostro bilancio piantando 50 alberi di avocado. In questo modo, abbiamo ridotto le nostre emissioni di 30 tonnellate superando così del 375% quella che produciamo annualmente.
Sicuramente il nostro sforzo non sarà visibile, non avrà lo stesso impatto di una protesta pacifica a favore dell’ambiente come è stato il #fridaysforfuture dell’anno passato, ma se ognuno cercasse di ridurre e magari azzerare i propri sprechi, forse riusciremmo a far girare di nuovo nel modo giusto le lancette di quell’orologio.

JEBO: the first Zero Impact Junior Enterprise

What is more urgent than the climate crisis we are facing? Each of us, individually and collectively, has the responsibility to do something for the planet, if we want to leave it to future generations.
Sara Montalti, our Communication Associate and Business and Economics student, today is going to tell us how JEBO has become the first Zero Impact Junior Enterprise.

That’s how long Earth has left before there’s no turning back, and it’s definitely not a lot.
In 6 years you barely start middle school, in 6 years you get a degree without being able to actually use it: if you were told you only had 6 years left to live, what would be the first thing you would do?
FIGHT!
Fight to gain more time, to be able to live your experiences longer, to see the people you love grow up and to reach those goals you set for yourself as a child, when you were still looking at the world with naive eyes.
Our planet is not like a supermarket food that once expired can be bought again: we have only one Earth and, despite the fact there may be other habitable planets in the Universe, we have been granted this and certainly we are not putting forth any effort to make it last as long as possible.
Making sustainable life choices can no longer be one of the possible options, a passing fad, it must be a moral obligation towards ourselves, as we deserve a future, and especially towards the generations to which we are taking it away without even giving them any choice.
Before we can find a solution, however, we need to know the root of the problem: what makes Earth’s clock hands move counterclockwise instead of in the correct direction?
Our impact on the Planet
Just as when we walk on the beach and leave our footprints in the sand, we leave indelible marks on the Earth resulting from our actions: our carbon footprint, literally the carbon footprint that each of us leaves on the Earth due to her lifestyle.
Every individual, organization, company, product or service has a more or less heavy impact on the Planet and the carbon footprint is a useful tool to increase awareness, measure emissions and reduce consumption.
Understanding how much you affect the Earth’s ecosystem is the first step to reduce waste and contribute to the reversal of the dramatic course that climate change is taking.
At the end of 2020, JEBO decided to calculate its environmental footprint
By meticulously entering all of our data and through the use of an online calculator, we were able to estimate our environmental impact, corresponding to a value equal to 8 tons of CO² emitted annually by the entire association.
This value was already very low in itself: just think that the global emissions in 2019 were 1.354.388 tons of CO².
With a level of pollution equal to the 0.0005% of the world’s one, certainly we could have already considered ourselves satisfied and stopped there, promising not to increase our waste. Nevertheless, being a Junior Entrepreneur means above all to invest in your future: if we are not the first to do something we can not expect others to do it.

These are the three words that most characterize JEBO and push us day after day to go beyond the limits we’ve set.
This is why, after calculating our footprint on the world, we took action and decided to become the first European Junior to have a Carbon Footprint equal to 0.
How did we achieve this paramount result?
Thanks to the collaboration with Zero CO², we were able to reduce our carbon footprint to zero by planting 50 avocado trees. Applying this behaviour, we have reduced our emissions by 30 tons, thus exceeding by 375% the emissions we produce annually.
Surely our effort will not be visible, it will not have the same impact as a peaceful protest in favor of the environment as it was the #fridaysforfuture last year, but if everyone would try to reduce and maybe zero their waste, we will hopefully be able to turn the Earth’s clock hands back to the right way.
